Edema and Swelling

Swelling or edema of the tissues, particularly in the legs, is a common worry for numerous individuals as it could be a sign of underlying severe health issues. Such a condition may serve as an early warning for critical heart-related ailments like hypertension, diabetes, and atherosclerosis.

In Oriental medicine, this specific health issue is frequently associated with the condition of the Kidneys and, to a somewhat lesser degree, the Lungs. When the Kidneys are deficient in their capacity to regulate fluids and the Lungs are not functioning optimally, it can result in the accumulation of fluids closer to the body's surface. Due to its inherent tendency to sink downwards, this excess fluid typically gathers in the lower extremities.

Another crucial aspect to consider is the interconnection between the Stomach and Spleen. In addition to supplying essential fluids for optimal Stomach function, the Kidneys play a vital role in maintaining digestive health. When there is a deficiency in fluids, it can disrupt the digestive process, leading to the accumulation of Phlegm or Dampness. In this case there will either be appetite or no appetite depending on the severity of the imbalance.

Treatment

Moxibustion applied to the lower limbs, particularly focusing on the soles of the feet, is vital for addressing this particular concern. The soles of the feet hold significant importance as they are closely linked to the Kidneys, with the starting point of the Kidney meridian situated in this area.

It is intriguing to note that as per the guidance of my instructors, there exist several situations where it is deemed more suitable to focus on treating the Spleen. This preference is due to the Spleen's capacity to restore the fluids of the Kidneys, even in cases where the tissues may appear excessively parched to take in water effectively.
